Hanuman mandir patna

Image result for hanu mandir patnaMahavir Mandir, Patna is one of the leading Hanuman temples in the country. Daily thousands of devotees throng the temple and get solace from the worship of Hanumanji. It is a ‘manokamana’ mandir where devotees’ every wish is fulfilled and this is the reason for ever-increasing number of devotees in the temple.
As per the Patna High Court judgment in 1948 the temple exists since time immemorial. But from the scrutiny of historical facts and traditions it appears that this temple was originally established by Swami Balanand, an ascetic of Ramanandi sect in around 1730 A.D.
The main temple has got two idols of Hanumanji one for परित्राणाय साधूनाम् i.e. for the protection of good people and another for विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् i.e. for the elimination of the wicked persons. The temple belongs to Ramanand sect although from 1900 A.D. it had been in the possession of the Gosain Sanyasis till 1948 A.D.
In 1948 A.D. it was declared a public temple by Patna High Court. A new, magnificent temple was reconstructed between 1983 and 1985 at the old site at the initiative of Kishore Kunal with devotees’ contribution and now it is one of the most magnificent temples in the country.

Also, the holy words, “prabisi nagar keejai sab kaaja, hriday rakhi koshalpur raaja”(प्रबिसि नगर कीजै सब काजा हृदय राखि कोसलपुर राजा), are inscribed thereon, as if Lord hanuman himself, is blessing people and welcoming them for their success.

Golghar

History

For a dome with a view, climb the Golghar, an imposing landmark in the city of Patna, which lies to the west of the Gandhi Maidan. The monument is spherical in shape, which gives it the name ‘Golghar’, meaning ‘Round House’. The British army built this massive peculiar shaped granary in 1786, to serve as a storehouse during the times of famines.

After the vicious famine of 1770, which killed nearly 10 million people in the region, Warren Hastings, the then Governor-General of India, ordered the construction of this dome-shaped structure for the purpose of storing grains for the British. However, it was Captain John Garstin, an engineer in the British East India Company who got it constructed. The construction of Golghar was completed on July 20, 1786.

The base of the edifice is 125 meters in width and its walls are 3.6 meters thick. It has a dual spiral stairway, with 145 steps on each side, designed so that workers could climb up one side and descend the other. The staircase winds around and leads to the top of the structure, offering a panoramic view of the city and the River Ganges. Golghar with its architectural wonder continues to entice tourists in Patna.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Golghar and Patna itself is just after monsoon in the month of October to February. However, evenings are an ideal time to visit Golghar.

Trivia

Golghar has a storage capacity of nearly 140000 tonnes of grains, which is sufficient to supply for thousands of people.

At time of its construction, Golghar was the tallest building in Patna.

Interestingly, Golghar has never been filled to its maximum capacity due to an oversight during the construction of the structure; the doors were designed to open from the inside. As a result, if it is filled to its maximum capacity, then the doors will not open.
